Episode Ninety-two:
The Great Bayview Escape Part I:
Jack Has a Plan to Free Isabella.

[Air date early December 1989]

SCENE ONE: JACK IS BACK IN HIS OFFICE.

JACK: Hold all my calls please.

HE OPENS HIS BRIEFCASE AND TAKES OUT A GUN WRAPPED IN A TOWEL. JUST AS HE IS ABOUT TO PLACE IT IN HIS TOP DRAWER, JENNIFER ENTERS.

JENNIFER: Jack how come you change everything that I write?

JACK: Don't you ever knock?

HE QUICKLY HIDES THE GUN IN THE DRAWER.

JENNIFER: What are you hiding? Come on Jack, fess up. I know that you were hiding something right in there.

JACK: What can I say? You caught me. Yeah, you caught me with my lethal weapon.

HE PULLS OUT A PISTOL AND POINTS IT AT HER THEN BEGINS SQUIRTING HER WITH WATER.

JENNIFER: Oh Jack, cut it out.

JACK: Hahahaha. Yeah I'll cut it out alright. And speaking of cutting it out, aren't you supposed to be cutting out for that career day at that little school?

JENNIFER: I'm not leaving here until you tell me what's going on.

JACK: You're going to stand up all the little kids of the world? I really thought better of you.

JENNIFER: Oh yeah. And I really thought that we could talk about anything Jack.

JACK: There's nothing to talk about Jennifer.

JENNIFER: You're in trouble.

JACK: Jennifer, according to the people in this town, I am trouble.

JENNIFER: This has to do with Marina Toscano, I know it does.

JACK: This is starting to sound like a broken record Jennifer.

JENNIFER: I think I struck a nerve.

JACK: I think you struck out.

JENNIFER: Jack, just tell me please. No matter what it is, I can help. Just tell me.

JACK: Not now. Not yet.

JENNIFER: Alright, okay, I'll just wait, alright. I'll just sit around and wait until you've been killed like Marina Toscano. I'll probably have to read about it in the papers before you tell me.

JACK: As long as you read about it in The Spectator first. Jennifer....

SHE WALKS OUT AND SLAMS THE DOOR. SHE IS HURT THAT HE WILL NOT ALLOW HER TO HELP HIM.

JACK FEELS BAD FOR NOT TALKING TO HER. JACK THEN SWAPS THE WATER PISTOL WITH THE REAL GUN AND PUTS THEM BOTH BACK IN HIS DRAWER.

JACK: Not yet.

SCENE TWO: JACK GOES BACK TO BAYVIEW AND AS HE COMES INTO ISABELLA'S ROOM SHE STARTS ASKING HIM QUESTIONS.

ISABELLA: Oh Jack, I'm so glad you're here....

JACK: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Take it easy.

ISABELLA: I'm sorry. I'm just anxious to get out of here.

JACK: I know. I'm anxious too. Now more than ever.

ISABELLA: Something's wrong I can tell.

JACK: Yeah. Why don't you sit down?

ISABELLA: I don't want to sit. Tell me.

JACK: This is difficult to explain.

ISABELLA: Try.

JACK: I think I might know who killed your sister.

ISABELLA: You do?

JACK: Yeah. The more I look into this thing with Marina, the more dangerous it's getting.

ISABELLA: Dangerous for who?

JACK: For you.

ISABELLA: Jack, you're scaring me.

JACK: Good. I think you should be aware of what's going on out there.

ISABELLA: Tell me everything.

JACK: You're sure? Are you ready?

ISABELLA: I want to know.

JACK: Victor Kiriakis. A man named Victor Kiriakis. Marina had or has something that he wants very badly.

ISABELLA: It's a key. It's a key that belonged to my father. Victor Kiriakis has always wanted it. It belongs to my family.

JACK: A key. Well all I know is that this key is important enough to Victor that he would have killed Marina to get it.

ISABELLA: I don't understand what any of this has to do with me.

JACK: Maybe he didn't get it and if he didn't, he's going to come after you.

ISABELLA: Why?

JACK: Because you're the sister. Anyone would assume that she told you where it is.

ISABELLA: Well that's ridiculous. I don't know where it is.

JACK: Well he doesn't know that. Obviously this key is very valuable. I mean it's valuable enough to kill for it.

ISABELLA: Jack, I don't care about anything. I just want to get out of here.

JACK: You don't have to worry about that. I'll take care of that. I'll make sure that nothing happens to you.

ISABELLA: You do care, don't you?

JACK: Yeah, I do.

ISABELLA: So what's your plan?

JACK: The plan is to get you out of here as fast as possible. Because the longer you stay here the more vulnerable you get.

ISABELLA: So these competency papers your attorneys are filing in court are going to help me get out.

JACK: That's right.

ISABELLA: Do you believe them?

JACK: Well they're the best in this town. They're definitely the most expensive. If they can't do it then nobody can.

ISABELLA: What if they can't? What if I can't get out of here?

JACK: You're going to get out of here. I'm telling you, I will get you out of here.

ISABELLA: You don't know that.

JACK: You don't have any faith. Remember, trust.

ISABELLA: You're the first person I've trusted in a long time.

JACK: Well I won't let you down. That's a promise. I've got to get you out of here before somebody figures out that you and Marina were sisters. We have to make sure that nobody gets that connection.

WHILE JACK IS TALKING, MARCUS HAS COME TO THE DOOR AND HE OVERHEARS THE CONVERSATION.

SCENE THREE: MEANWHILE JENNIFER IS AT HER SCHOOL CAREER DAY. EMILIO IS THERE TOO AND SHE TELLS HIM SHE IS VERY WORRIED ABOUT JACK BECAUSE HE IS IN BIG TROUBLE. HE AGREES TO HELP HER BECAUSE OTHERWISE SHE WILL GET HERSELF IN TROUBLE.

SCENE FOUR: JACK COMES OUT OF ISABELLA'S ROOM AND MARCUS IS WAITING.

JACK: Marcus.

MARCUS: Alright I'll go first. What are you doing here Jack?

JACK: I....ah....I'm....I'm seeing the patients. I'm visiting the patients. I'm doing a little community service work. Ah....I'm visiting.

MARCUS: Okay, cut the game. I heard you talk and I know that Isabella is Marina'a sister. I just don't know how you're involved that's all.

JACK: Well I could ask you the same question. How are you involved?

MARCUS: Forget it.

JACK: Well, at least we agree on one thing.

MARCUS: She came to Steve's house one day, okay. That's right, that's right. She wouldn't talk to me. I thought she knew something about the trouble he was having with Marina. Now that I know they're sisters, I know that she's involved Jack.

JACK IS OBVIOUSLY STUNNED TO HEAR THAT ISABELLA WAS OUTSIDE BAYVIEW, BUT HE TRIES TO COVER HIS SURPRISE.

JACK: You know something. You should stick to medicine and stay away from the private eye stuff because you are way off base.

MARCUS: Is that right, eh?

JACK: Yeah.

MARCUS: Well if you won't answer my questions maybe Isabella will, eh?

JACK: Stay away from her. You have to just stay away from her.

MARCUS: Whoa, well Jack. What happened here? Did I hit a nerve or what, man?

JACK: No. Look she's not involved in any of this.

MARCUS: Oh she's not?

JACK: No she's not.

MARCUS: Then you won't mind if I ask her a few questions then eh?

JACK: No wait, wait, wait. Marcus, please, you see, I have been talking to her for some time, really trying to get her to open up and it's taken a long time. You're a doctor, you can understand how that is and I just can't let you jeopardize that.

MARCUS: Yeah well I can't let you jeopardize Steve or Kayla either.

JACK: If you get involved now we could lose everything.

MARCUS: Oh, what everything? What have you got up your sleeve man? Come on, spit it out.

JACK: I....I can't tell you. You're just going to have to trust me.

MARCUS: Ha....ha....ha. Yeah you and trust don't belong in the same sentence.

JACK: Look, look, I'm trying to help Steve and Kayla. I may be the only one who can and if you get involved in this thing now I can't do it. Please, please.

MARCUS: Alright, alright. I won't for now. But if I find out that you are trying to hurt Steve and Kayla, I'll....

JACK: I'm not. I'm not. I promise you, I'm only trying to help them. I'm not trying to hurt them, I'm only trying to help.

SCENE FIVE: MEANWHILE JENNIFER AND EMILIO HAVE GONE TO JACK'S OFFICE. JENNIFER WANTS TO KNOW WHAT HE HAD HIDDEN IN HIS TOP DRAWER. IT IS LOCKED BUT EMILIO OPENS IT IN SECONDS. EMILIO FINDS THE WATER PISTOL AND THE REAL GUN. EMILIO TELLS HER TO STAY AWAY FROM JACK BECAUSE HE MUST BE INTO SOMETHING HEAVY BUT SHE SAYS SHE CANNOT BECAUSE JACK NEEDS HER MORE THAN EVER NOW.

[Air date early December 1989]

SCENE ONE: JACK IS IN HIS OFFICE PACKING HIS BRIEFCASE WHEN VERN COMES IN.

VERN: Excuse me Jack. I need this file.

JACK: Oh Vern, while you're at it, can you confirm these two tickets for me?

JENNIFER WALKS IN AS JACK HANDS VERN THE TICKETS.

VERN: Italy, again?

JACK: Yeah, well. I figured I need a little vacation besides it'll give you a chance to take that little lunch break you've been talking about.

VERN: Lucky me.

JACK: Yeah.

JENNIFER: So, planning a little time off Jack?

JACK: Yes. Well you're the one that was saying I was a little grumpy lately. I figured that a little rest would do the trick.

JENNIFER: You're in trouble Jack.

JACK: No. You're the one that's going to be in trouble if you don't stop sticking your nose where it doesn't belong.

JENNIFER: You can't fire a reporter for asking questions. And what would you say if I told you I had proof that you were definitely involved in something?

JACK: I would say, what in your mind, constitutes proof?

JENNIFER: The gun in your top desk drawer. What's it doing there Jack?

JACK: Gun....gun. Oh yes the rubber gun in my top desk drawer.

JENNIFER: Jack, you know very well that I am not talking about the rubber gun in your drawer.

JACK: I think you've been doing a little too much work on those Riverfront gangs.

JENNIFER: I saw the real gun. I had it in my hands.

JACK: Huh!

JENNIFER: Jack, I'm worried about you.

JACK: Moi?

JENNIFER: You're doing this to help someone else.

JACK: Oh, now I think you're really imagining things.

JENNIFER: It's a woman in the Bayview Sanitarium. I figured it out Jack, just like you taught me. Okay. And judging by the sound of her voice, whoever she is, she isn't all that crazy.

JACK BEGINS TO HUM ONE OF THOSE SPOOKY, OLD TIME SOAPERISH THINGS "OOOOEEEEEEEAHHH" WHILE JENNIFER IS TALKING.

JACK: Now we're jumping to one of our melodramatic conclusions again.

JENNIFER: You're going to get her released aren't you? That's what this little vacation is all about. You're going to take her away.

JACK: No, the only one who's being taken away is me. I'm going on a vacation, alone. By myself.

JENNIFER: I just want to help you. Can't you understand that? Alright! I don't know the details but I know that whatever you're mixed up in is dangerous. Don't go into this alone.

JACK: There is nothing dangerous about going on a vacation. And that is exactly what I'm going to do. Period. Now if you don't mind I've got a little bit of work I need to do before the plane takes off. If you don't mind.

JENNIFER: Alright Jack, if you say so.

JACK: I do say so.

JENNIFER: Fine. Have a nice trip Jack.

JACK: Thank you. And Jennifer if you could close the....

SHE SLAMS THE DOOR AS SHE LEAVES.

JACK GOES TO HIS DRAWER AND TAKES OUT THE REAL GUN. HE LOOKS AT IT FOR A WHILE AND THEN PUTS IT BACK.

JACK: No, why ask for trouble.

JUST AS HE PUTS THE GUN AWAY, JENNIFER COMES BACK IN. SHE CANNOT LET IT REST.

JENNIFER: So, when will you be back?

JACK: Who knows? That's the advantage of being the publisher and owner of this rag. Besides with you and Vern on the job, I've got nothing to worry about.

JENNIFER: (Sadly) I'll miss you. (Beat) It's not the same when you're gone.

THEY BOTH ARE SILENT FOR A FEW MOMENTS, LOOKING INTENTLY, AND EMOTIONALLY AT EACH OTHER, BUT TOO AFRAID TO ADMIT THEIR REAL FEELINGS FOR EACH OTHER.

JACK: I'll bet. (Beat) You can save the strokes. Your job is safe.

JENNIFER: I meant what I said Jack, about everything.

JACK: Ah....well, so much for the long goodbyes.

HE PICKS UP HIS SUIT JACKET AND AS HE PUTS IT ON, HIS WALLET FALLS UNDER THE DESK. HE SEEMS TO WANT TO TELL HER THAT HE WILL MISS HER AS WELL, BUT DOES NOT.

JACK: Ah, I tell you what. I'll write when I get work.

JENNIFER: Jack, will you please listen to me for a minute?

JACK: I want you to work hard, okay. Work hard.

JENNIFER: Jack?

JACK OPENS THE DOOR AND EMILIO IS STANDING THERE.

JACK: Ah....I tell you one thing. If you kids want to play in the desk, it's open. It's easier on the locks.

AS HE IS TALKING HE IS STRUGGLING TO PUT HIS COAT ON SO EMILIO TRIES TO HELP.

JACK: Just leave it alone right.

JACK LEAVES AND JENNIFER TELLS EMILIO THAT JACK WOULD NOT LET HER HELP HIM. EMILIO TELLS HER TO GET THE HINT AND STAY AWAY FROM HIM.

SCENE TWO: SCOTT ARRIVES AND THE TWO GUYS DECIDED TO ORDER PIZZA BECAUSE JENNIFER SAID SHE CANNOT GO OUT UNTIL SHE FINISHES HER ARTICLE. SHE SITS AT JACK'S DESK AND TRIES TO READ ANY INFORMATION SHE CAN FIND ON HIS DESK. SHE IS PREOCCUPIED THINKING ABOUT JACK AND TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT HE IS PLANNING.

SCENE THREE: MEANWHILE JACK GOES TO THE SANITARIUM.

MALE NURSE: There have been people here asking about your friend. People in fancy suits who ride in big shiny cars that somebody else drives.

JACK: Wait a minute, give me a description. License plates.

MALE NURSE: I don't know. The day guy let me in on it.

JACK: Well thanks for not making me pay him.

MALE NURSE: I thought you'd want to know.

THE NURSE WALKS AWAY LEAVING JACK WORRIED. HE GOES INTO ISABELLA'S ROOM.

ISABELLA: Jack, you're here. Did you talk to your lawyers?

JACK: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Ah, yeah, I talked to the lawyers. Look I was hoping to get....ah....get through this thing on the up and up.

ISABELLA: Was?

JACK: Yeah. I don't think we can wait around for the wheels of justice. I think we have to walk you out of here tonight.

ISABELLA: Tonight?

JACK: Yeah, somebody's getting a little too nosey for my tastes.

ISABELLA: Do you think it's Victor Kiriakis?

JACK: Could be. But I'm not going to wait around to find out. I tell you what. Get only the things that are most important to you. Nothing that will raise suspicion. I'll be back in a couple minutes.

ISABELLA: How are you getting out of here?

JACK: Well you tell me. You're the one that walked out of here before. You see the secret is to get out without anybody knowing and the for us to get out with nobody seeing us together. That shouldn't be too hard. I mean how many attendants are there around here anyway?

ISABELLA: Jack.

JACK: Yep.

ISABELLA: Thank you.

JACK: Oh, save it until you're out of here for good.

JACK LEAVES HER ROOM TO SCOPE THE PLACE.

SCENE FOUR: MEANWHILE JENNIFER IS CLEANING UP AFTER THE PIZZA. SHE SITS DOWN AT JACK'S DESK AND OPENS THE DRAWER. SHE LOOKS AT THE GUN AND DECIDES THAT JACK MUST WANT HER HELP OR HE WOULD HAVE LOCKED THE DRAWER. SHE FINDS A NEWSPAPER WITH AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE TOSCANO FAMILY AND SEES THE NAME OF ISABELLA. SHE REALIZES THAT SHE MUST BE THE ONE IN THE SANITARIUM. SHE GOES THERE TO SEE IF SHE CAN FIND JACK.

SCENE FIVE: AT BAYVIEW SHE TRIES TO SPEAK TO THE DOCTOR IN CHARGE BUT THEY TELL HER THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL WORKING HOURS. SHE THEN SAYS THAT HER BOSS IS THERE AND THEY TELL HER THAT THERE ARE NO VISITORS THERE AT ALL.

SCENE SIX: ISABELLA IS PUTTING HER THINGS TOGETHER. SHE FINDS JACK'S COAT AND PICKS IT UP AND GENTLY TOUCHES IT. JACK COMES BACK.

JACK: Alright, are you all set?

ISABELLA: Yes I think so. I guess I didn't think you'd back so soon.

JACK: Just get everything together and let's go.

ISABELLA: Okay. I want to take my book and I need to get my....

JACK: No, no. Calm down. First thing is calm down. We don't want to arouse suspicion, alright. I want you to go downstairs, go through the lounge to the Emergency Exit. I'll meet you there. You know where that is?

ISABELLA: Yes. I know where it is.

JACK: Good, good. Let's go. Right, let's get out of here. Remember the important thing is not to arouse any suspicion.

JACK OPENS THE DOOR AND TWO MALE ATTENDANTS ARE STANDING THERE.

JACK: Gentlemen. I don't believe we've been introduced. I know it's after visiting hours but you don't understand.

ATTENDANT: Your plans are cancelled. You and your friend aren't going anywhere.
