SCENE ONE: IN ITALY, STEVE HAS BEEN HELPING MARINA RETRIEVE A KEY THAT WAS HIDDEN UNDERWATER. IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO GET IT, THEY WERE ATTACKED BY VICTOR'S HENCHMEN AND STEVE'S BAD EYE WAS DAMAGED AGAIN. STEVE THINKS THE KEY IS LOST BUT REALLY MARINA HAS IT.
SCENE TWO: JO AND MARCUS ARE AT THE HOSPITAL DISCUSSING THE FACT THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW WHERE KAYLA IS. THEY ARE VERY CONCERNED AND AS THEY ARE TALKING JACK TURNS UP.
JO: Jack, I'm glad you're here.JACK: Maybe I can be of some assistance.
MARCUS: Well I don't see how. Even if you can, I don't think Steve wants your assistance.
JO: Marcus.
MARCUS: Sorry Jo but Steve is my friend and the only thing Jack's been to him is trouble.
MARCUS' PAGER GOES OFF AND HE HAS TO LEAVE.
JACK: Saved by the beep.
JO: I'm sorry, he shouldn't have talked to you like that.
JACK: Oh, no, come on. He's a doctor. He calls them as he sees them.
JO: I know you're concerned about Steve and Kayla.
JACK: Concerned?
JO: Huh, uh.
JACK: Concerned. Well I think that's kind of a rich word. You better be careful, that could unsettle the stomach.
JO: Do you know where she is?
JACK: I am some thoughts on the matter but I think I'll keep them to myself.
JO: Is she in any danger?
JACK: Danger? You mean like physical danger?
JO: Yes.
JACK: I don't think so but then again I'm no expert on matters of the heart. Okay.
JO: Wait, wait, where are you going?
JACK: To Steve and Kayla's house.
JO: Marcus said she wasn't there.
JACK: She might be hiding behind the door or maybe she's not answering the phone. Or maybe, just maybe, she's hidden a secret message under a flower pot in the garden.
JO: How can you joke like this when it's so serious?
JACK: I think serious times are the best times to joke.
JO: Jack.
JACK: It's a good thing you told me. You did the right thing.
JACK HURRIES AWAY.
SCENE THREE: MEANWHILE AT STEVE AND KAYLA'S HOUSE, STEVE HAS ARRIVED. HIS EYE IS COVERED BUT IS BLEEDING AND HE IS VERY WEAK. HE BANGS ON THE DOOR AND CALLS FOR KAYLA. HE FINDS HIS KEY AND IS TRYING TO PUT IT IN THE LOCK WHEN JACK OPENS THE DOOR.
JACK: Steve.
STEVE: Jack, what are you doing here? How did you get in my house?
JACK: What the hell happened to you?
STEVE: That's none of your business. How did you get in? Did you break into my house? Did you break in?
JACK: No, no, I had a key.
STEVE: What do you mean you had a key? You wouldn't have a key to my house. You liar. Kayla wouldn't give you a key. What are you talkin' about?
JACK: Look, you're very messed up. Let me help you get inside so you can rest.
STEVE WRESTLES WITH JACK AND WILL NOT LET HIM HELP.
STEVE: KAYLA! KAYLA! Sweetness.
JACK: She's gone.
STEVE: What are you talkin' about? What did you do to her, uh? WHAT HAPPENED TO KAYLA? Hey, hey, you're not going to jerk me around. Now you listen here.
JACK: Steve.
STEVE: Kayla lives here. She was supposed to be here. She knew I was coming home.
JACK: She did?
STEVE: Yeah, she did. That's right. So you're playing these little games with me Jackson. That's no good.
JACK: No. I'm not playing any games with you. I'm trying to help you.
STEVE: Yes you are. You want to help me? Ha, ha.
JACK: Look, you're very messed up. You better sit down. I've got to get you to a hospital.
STEVE: I don't want to go. Where's Kayla? WHERE'S KAYLA?
JACK: If I knew I would tell you.
STEVE: No, you wouldn't tell me. You want to play games with me. You enjoy this kind of thing. You just want to make me beg to find my own wife. You want to make me beg.
JACK: No. You're not making any sense, Steve.
STEVE: YOU WANT TO CRAWL AROUND HERE WHEN WE'RE HAVING PROBLEMS. YOU WANT TO MAKE THINGS WORSE.
JACK: Steve. No. No. Look I don't know where she is. Look you're too messed up to try to hurt me. Don't you understand. Will you let me get you to a hospital while you....
STEVE: Help me....help me find Kayla. (Crying) Please.
JACK: I'm sorry. I'm sorry I can't.
STEVE: If you don't help me I'll break your neck. I'll break your neck.
JACK: Steve, Steve. I don't....STEVE, STEVE.
STEVE COLLAPSES IN JACK'S ARMS.
JACK: I've got to get you to a hospital.
SCENE FOUR: JACK IS HELPING WHEEL STEVE INTO THE HOSPITAL ON A GURNEY.
JACK: HELP! HELP!
JO: Steve.
MARCUS: What happened?
JACK: He showed up at the house. He collapsed right there at the door.
JO: How is he?
MARCUS: It's difficult to say. It looks like he has a major injury to his orbital socket.
JO: Oh my god!
JACK: Look I got him here as soon as I could. He just collapsed at the door. I just threw him in the car. He is going to alright isn't he?
MARCUS: Look I don't want to make an evaluation until I do a workup okay.
JO: But he looks so weak.
MARCUS: Jo look, he's a strong man okay. He's been through a lot. Faith, Find Kayla, you understand? He's going to need her.
JO: Okay. (To Jack) Where's Kayla? What's going on?
JACK: I don't know. Look don't press me on this alright.
JO: Jack I know that you know something's going on.
JACK: Believe me. Look you don't need to know about this. YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT OKAY!
JO: I need to know.
JACK: TRUST ME! YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW. TRUST ME!
JO: I want to trust you.
JACK: (Cynical laugh) Oh what am I.... oh of course. Who are we talking to here? I'm Happy Jack the used car salesman. You can't trust me.
JO: Jack.
JACK: Oh of course. I know that, huh.
JO: Jack. No matter what you think I've done to you, no matter how you think I've failed you, don't punish me now. Please stand be me on this one.
JACK: I.... I don't have anywhere to go. I'll stand right here. Believe me.
JO: If Kayla comes, he's going to need both of us.
JACK: No, no. He's going to need you.
JO: No, he's going to need both of us. You're his brother. You can't deny that. I don't think you even want to deny that.
JACK: Wait....wait a minute. Hold it right here. We're going to be here for a couple of hours, alright. It's going to be kind of tense and it will be very unpleasant. It would be best if we keep the outbursts to a minimum, alright?
JO: Alright. Okay. Okay son.
JO PUTS HER HAND ON JACK'S SHOULDER AND HE SIGHS.
JO: Where do you think Kayla is? What could have happened to her?
JACK: I don't know. She moved out.
JO: Oh that's impossible.
JACK: Is it? They had some kind of problem. She moved out.
JO: But they love each other. They'll work things out.
JACK: All I know is that I came in the house I could see that she'd be gone a couple of days.
JO: Then there's a mistake. Kayla would never leave Steve unless she had a good reason.
JACK: She did.
JO: What?
JACK: Marcus, how is he?
MARCUS: Generally he's going to be just fine.
JO: OH!
JACK: Specifically, specifically! How is he?
MARCUS: Specifically, Steve has suffered extensive damage around the new eye socket. He has an orbital fracture. Infection has set in. I don't think we're going to be able to save that socket.
JO: What exactly does that mean?
MARCUS: I don't think he's going to be able to wear a glass eye.
JO: So he'll wear the patch.
MARCUS: Probably, yes. Steve can handle it.
JO: Can I see him?
MARCUS: Oh yeah, just for a moment though. We had to sedate him okay.
JO: Yes. (To Jack) Want to come with me?
JACK: Well, I guess so. I'm not doing anything else.
JO: You belong there as much as I do.
JACK: Aaaaah....I think that's stretching things a bit.
JO: I'd like you to come.
JACK: Well in that case let's go.
JACK AND JO WALK OFF AND MARINA APPEARS FROM THE NEXT ROOM. SHE HAD BEEN LISTENING TO THEIR CONVERSATION.
SCENE FIVE: STEVE IS IN HIS ROOM, JACK AND JO ENTER. JO SITS NEXT TO STEVE BUT JACK STAYS JUST INSIDE THE DOOR. JO TELLS STEVE HOW MUCH SHE LOVES HIM AND THAT EVEN THOUGH KAYLA IS NOT HERE RIGHT NOW, SHE LOVES HIM TOO. JO TELLS STEVE HOW SORRY SHE IS THAT SHE GAVE UP HER STEVEY AND HER BILLY BUT THAT EVERYBODY DOES THINGS THEY ARE ASHAMED OFF. THAT IS LIFE. JACK BOWS HIS HEAD IN HIS OWN SHAME. JO TELLS STEVE THAT WE ALL HAVE TO MOVE PAST THAT FOR A BETTER LIFE. WHILE JO IS TALKING JACK NOTICES THAT MARINA IS LOOKING THROUGH THE DOOR AT THEM. STEVE CALLS FOR KAYLA. JACK LOOKS OUTSIDE AGAIN AND MARINA IS GONE. HE LEAVES THE ROOM SILENTLY AND WALKS AWAY.
SCENE ONE: MEANWHILE KAYLA HAS MOVED TO A HOTEL AND JACK FINDS HER A SHORT TIME LATER.
KAYLA: Who is it?
JACK: Kayla, it's Jack.
KAYLA: How did you find me?
JACK: Look, don't worry about that. I have to talk to you about Steve.
KAYLA: I don't want to hear it.
JACK: Steve just got back into town.
KAYLA: I don't care. It doesn't matter to me where Steve is.
JACK: Kayla, Steve is in the hospital.
KAYLA: What? What happened, why is Steve in the hospital?
JACK: Well...er....as far as I can tell he ran into some kind of trouble in Italy I guess.
KAYLA: How badly is he hurt?
JACK: I don't know. There's some damage to his eye....his glass eye....and Marcus is worried.
KAYLA: Steve.
JACK: I think it's time to go back to Salem.
KAYLA: I don't know what I'm going to do Jack.
JACK: Oh, okay let's look at your options. You're hurt but you still love him. You want to run away from him but you're carrying his baby.
KAYLA: Jack I really don't want to talk about this with you.
JACK: We're not asking for a permanent decision here but the man is lying in a hospital bed. My car is right here. I can take you back right now.
KAYLA: I didn't say I was going.
JACK: I'll be downstairs if you change your mind.
SCENE TWO: MEANWHILE EMILIO IS IN HOSPITAL TOO. HE GETS A PHONE CALL FROM SANTOS WHO IS AT THE PAYPHONE JUST OUTSIDE EMILIO'S ROOM. HE TELLS EMILIO THAT HE IS GOING TO PAY HIM BACK AND HURT HIS LITTLE GIRLFRIEND. EMILIO, IN A WHISPER, TELLS SANTOS TO BACK OFF. SANTOS SAYS THAT "MISS UPTOWN" IS ON HER WAY INTO SEE EMILIO AND THAT HE CAN GET HER ANYTIME HE LIKES. EMILIO SAYS HE IS BLUFFING BUT IN WALKS JENNIFER WEARING YELLOW JUST LIKE SANTOS HAD SAID.
SCENE THREE: EMILIO TELLS JENNIFER THAT SANTOS CALLED AND THAT SHE HAS TO GET OUT OF HERE AND STAY AWAY FROM HIM. SHE RUNS AWAY DOWN TO THE PIER WHERE SCOTT IS LISTENING TO A TAPE OF EMILIO SINGING AT THE BLOCK PARTY. JENNIFER ASKS SCOTT THAT SHE WILL BUY HIM LUNCH IF HE TAKES EMILIO ON AS A CLIENT. HE LAUGHS AND SAYS THAT HE WILL THINK ABOUT IT.
SCENE FOUR: MEANWHILE BACK AT THE HOSPITAL, KAYLA HAS DECIDED TO COME BACK WITH JACK. AS THEY WALK IN, MARINA IS STANDING BY THE PHONE.
JACK: I tell you Kayla, there is nothing to worry about. Steve is going to be so glad to see you.
KAYLA: Jack. Come on, let's just go in.
THEY BOTH TURN AND SEE MARINA.
MARINA: Kayla, I was....
KAYLA: Get out of my way.
JACK DECIDES TO GET RID OF MARINA.
JACK: Darling! (He kisses her on the cheek) Hmmm. Come on, let's go. The carriage awaits.
HE PICKS HER UP AND CARRIES HER AWAY.
MARINA: Stop it!
JACK: Newlyweds you know how it is.
MARINA: Excuse me.
SCENE FIVE: OUTSIDE, JACK ALMOST THROWS MARINA INTO HIS LIMO.
JACK: Get in or you're going to get a spanking.
MARINA: Put me down at once.
JACK: DRIVE!
MARINA: Where do you think you're taking me?
JACK: To the Estrella Taverna. Ha! Salem Inn.
MARINA: Good, you're saving me cab fare.
JACK: Well I figure I'm going to get something out of it too. This is what I'm trying to figure out. Unless you knew that we were going to run into each other, what were you doing hanging around the hospital?
MARINA: You know, that was quite an extraordinary scene back there, wouldn't you say?
JACK: Huh?
MARINA: I mean I've never seen Kayla like that. Hardly the mousey little thing I've come to know and like so well.
JACK: Yeah, you see, you like.
MARINA: Oh I do, I like her. She knows about Steve and me doesn't she?
JACK: Huh?
MARINA: She knows we were married and so do you.
JACK: Heh!
MARINA: You don't like me do you. I wish I knew why. I just hate it when that happens.
JACK: Well you can hardly blame me. Here I am throwing everything but the kitchen sink at you and you're still running after my brother. You're running after Steve, aren't you?
MARINA: There's another intelligent question. Yes. If I am running after your brother who's to stop me?
JACK: Me!
MARINA: Hehehehe.
SCENE SIX: MARINA WALKS INTO HER HOTEL ROOM AND SLAMS THE DOOR BEHIND HER.
MARINA: Thanks for the ride, Jack.
NEXT THING JACK OPENS THE DOOR AND HOLDS UP A CREDIT CARD.
JACK: Don't leave home without it.
MARINA: If you don't leave I'm going to call security.
JACK: Now come on. Wouldn't you rather talk to me than some boring security guard.
MARINA: I don't have anything to say to anyone.
JACK: Great! Then just listen.
MARINA: Five minutes.
JACK: Oh you're being too generous.
MARINA: Oh what a terrible fault I have.
JACK: Okay. Now the way I figure it, you've got....you had this arrangement with Steve, right. Now you....no. Wait....okay, he was....he was....okay. He was going to help you get this key, right, and then wait....okay....no....er....then he was going to....then you were going to....four letter...."town." You were going to leave town.
MARINA: Jack, is that your subtle way of asking me to leave town?
JACK: Hey I'd pack your teddies anytime!
MARINA: Well I will remember that if and when the day ever comes I decide to leave your little town.
JACK: I know what you mean. It kind of grows on you, like fungus.
MARINA: Hmmm, exactly my thoughts.
JACK: Hmmm.
MARINA: Would you like a drink?
JACK: What, at this time of the day?
MARINA: I always drink when I'm bored. No offense.
JACK: Oh, er, none taken. You know I was just thinking, I was really, er, thinking about you coming between Steve and Kayla and I really hate to see you waste your time. You know, trying to work the whole thing out.
WHILE SHE IS PREPARING THE DRINK, JACK IS TRYING TO PLANT A BUG IN HER APARTMENT.
MARINA: Jack! I suppose the next thing you're going to tell me is about Steve and Kayla's unbreakable love and how no one can come between them. Is that it?
JACK: Ah....you're too smart for me.
MARINA: Oh another fault I have.
JACK: Ah you know I think I will have that drink.
MARINA: Is that your way of admitting defeat?
JACK: Not quite, not yet.
MARINA: All in good time. How do you like it? With or without ice?
WHILE SHE IS POURING THE DRINK, JACK STICKS A BUG UNDER HER PHONE.
JACK: Ice. You know what I just realized? The meter's running. I've got to scoot. Later.
SCENE SEVEN: JACK SCURRIES OUT THE DOOR WHILE MARINA LOOKS AT HIM AS IF HE IS WEIRD. AS SOON AS HE IS GONE, SHE CALLS RECEPTION AND TELLS THEM TO TELL ANY CALLERS THAT SHE HAS CHECKED OUT. A SHORT TIME LATER VICTOR OPENS THE DOOR TO HER ROOM. IT SEEMS HE OWNS A CONTROLLING INTEREST IN THE SALEM INN AND SO THEY LET HIM HAVE A KEY. HE TELLS MARINA THAT HE WANTS THE KEY IMMEDIATELY. SHE TELLS HIM SHE AND STEVE FOUND THE KEY BUT IT WAS STOLEN FROM THEM. VICTOR TELLS HER THAT SHE IS LYING ABOUT EVERYTHING BECAUSE HE STOLE THE KEY AND IT WAS A FAKE MANUFACTURED THIS YEAR. HE TELLS HER HE WANTS THE REAL KEY OR SHE WILL SUFFER.
SCENE EIGHT: MEANWHILE, THANKS TO THE BUG HE PLANTED, JACK IS IN HIS LIMO LISTENING TO THE WHOLE CONVERSATION.
JACK: Marina and Victor K. Who'da thunk it?
JUST AS HE IS PUTTING AWAY THE LISTENING DEVICE, JENNIFER COMES ALONG.
JENNIFER: Jack.
JACK STANDS UP AND BUMPS HIS HEAD HARD ON THE LIFT UP DOOR ON THE LIMO. JACK DOES NOT WANT HER TO KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING. BOTH ARE HAPPIER TO SEE THE OTHER THAN THEY REVEAL.
JENNIFER: Jack. What are you doing here?
JACK: Ah nothing. I was going to walk to work.
JENNIFER: Really? I didn't know you knew how! (Beat) Ha ha ha ha. It's a joke Jack.
JACK: Joke? A joke, really.
JENNIFER: What's wrong with you?
JACK: Ah, nothing, nothing, ah, er....
JENNIFER: Jack you obviously have something on your mind.
JACK: I tell you the only thing on my mind is wondering why aren't you at work?
JENNIFER: I took the day off.
JACK: Oh really! Why?
JENNIFER: Because I wanted to spend some time with Emilio.
JACK: (Not wanting to let on that it bothers him that she is spending time with Emilio.) Oh really!
JENNIFER: Yes, and Scott and I talked and he came up with this great idea. He's going to help Emilio sing professionally.
JACK: (Sarcastically.) Hmmm. And they say dreams don't come true.
JENNIFER: Don't be like that Jack. Emilio is very talented.
JACK: Oh really! Were the guys that slit his throat, fans or just music admirers?
JENNIFER: What's the matter with you?
JACK: Nothing. I'm actually having a very good day. I'm giving the pearly whites a real work out, see!
HE GIVES HER A GREAT BIG TOOTHY GRIN.
JENNIFER: That's very cute. Why are you being so mean?
JACK: Mean? Mean? Me?
JENNIFER: Yes, yes, yes.
JACK: Well, I....it's just my natural self, I guess.
JENNIFER: I'm giving up Jack. I'm going home. I really don't want to deal with it.
JACK: Oh by all means don't let your professional Pulitzer prizewinning aspirations stand in the way of the old love life.
JENNIFER: My love life is none of your business Jack.
SHE BEGINS TO WALK AWAY AND HE CALLS AFTER HER.
JACK: Oh really! Well... er my business is none of your.... your.... love life.
SCENE ONE: STEVE HAS BEEN DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL. KAYLA IS STAYING AT HER PARENT'S PLACE AND STEVE ARRIVES WITH A BUNCH OF YELLOW ROSES.
KAYLA: Steve.
STEVE: Hi baby.
KAYLA: How did you find me?
STEVE: I called your mom.
KAYLA: She shouldn't have said anything.
STEVE: Baby, we got to talk.
KAYLA: Not now.
SHE TRIES TO SHUT THE DOOR BUT STEVE HOLDS IT. AS HE MOVES INTO THE ROOM JACK STANDS UP.
STEVE: What's he doing here? (Beat) Why is it every time I turn around, you're messing in my life.
JACK: You've messed up your own life Steve.
STEVE: Huh? Don't talk to me.
KAYLA: Stop it.
STEVE: Don't talk to me! I want to know what the hell he's doing here Kayla.JACK: I'm checking on Kayla.
STEVE: Kayla is none of your business.
KAYLA: Jack's been helping me.
STEVE: Oh yeah! What's he been helping you with Kayla? Finding a way to keep us apart, huh?
KAYLA: You've been doing that all by yourself. You and Marina.
JACK: I'm going to go. Kayla I hope that every...
STEVE HITS JACK IN THE BACK.
STEVE: Never mind, just go.
JACK: Look Steve, I'm just trying to help.
STEVE: I DON'T WANT....I DON'T WANT YOUR HELP. I DON'T WANT YOUR HELP. GO!
JACK: If you want it or not Steve, you need something.
STEVE PUSHES JACK OUT THE DOOR.
STEVE: DAMN HIM!
KAYLA: Jack's not the problem.
SCENE TWO: LATER ON, JACK IS DOWN ON THE PIER THINKING WHEN STEVE COMES RUNNING DOWN THE STEPS AND GRABS HIM.
STEVE: Hey Jack. We're going to talk. Now you listen to me. I don't know what's going on between you and my wife but it's going to stop now.
JACK: You ever get the feeling we've done this before?
STEVE: Just cut the crap.
JACK: This really blows your circuit, doesn't it?
STEVE: What?
JACK: Me helping you. Actually trying to help you save your marriage.
STEVE: Oooh! You're really trying to help save my marriage, aren't you? First you sneak behind my back to find out about Marina and then you take Kayla to Italy, just at the right moment. That's really trying to help save my marriage, isn't it?
JACK: Look, I wasn't the one in bed with Marina. That was you!
STEVE GETS VIOLENT.
STEVE: Don't you talk to me like that or I'm going to knock you down right here.
JACK: Quit wasting time with me, right. Go to your wife. She's the one who needs you.
STEVE: You don't know what my wife needs.
JACK: Well she sure the hell doesn't need someone running off to Italy when she's not feeling well, does she?
STEVE: She's feelin' fine. She was going to go to Italy with us, remember that?
JACK: But she didn't. Why didn't she? Why didn't she?
STEVE: It's none of your business. Now you can get the hell out of my face.
JACK: This Marina thing has really got to you hasn't it? You don't even know what's going on.
STEVE: SHUT UP!
JACK: You're so wrapped up in your old life and your old love, you wouldn't know what's wrong with Kayla if it hit you in the face.
STEVE: SHUT UP! There's nothing wrong with Kayla.
JACK: Of course there's nothing wrong with her. SHE'S PREGNANT!
STEVE: What are you saying? This is another one of your games.
JACK: I'm telling you the truth. I'm telling you the truth.
STEVE: NO! I WOULD KNOW IF SHE WAS PREGNANT.
JACK: Look at her! LOOK AT HER BODY! Look at her body!
STEVE PUNCHES JACK TO THE GROUND.
JACK: AARGH!
JACK STRUGGLES TO HIS FEET.
JACK: You think that it was me? Steve.... have a cigar! You're having a baby!
STEVE: How could you know before me?
JACK: That doesn't matter. That doesn't matter, before, during or after. Don't worry about me. Go worry about your wife. Go worry about your baby.
STEVE STARES AT JACK FOR A FEW SECONDS REALIZING THAT JACK WAS TRYING TO HELP, BUT NOT ABLE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT. HE THEN BEGINS TO WALK UP THE STEPS. HE STOPS HALFWAY.
STEVE: I don't need anymore of your help.
STEVE WALKS OFF.
JACK: Somebody's got to help you out of this mess and if I keep wanting them together, it's going to be me.
